A Beginning.

This is all new to me but I thought I would enjoy wrting down things I remember so that I can share them with my family and friends. Now to be honest, I don't remember nearly as much as my sister. She remembers EVERYTHING! This won't be in any particular order either. Just thoughts and memories.
I was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Lousiville. The interesting thing about that is that my husband was also born there. Now you might think...they both lived there so what's so interesting about that. Well neither of us lived anywhere near there. I was born there because my father insisted that my mother see a OB specialist at a really good hospital. He drove her over 80 miles to accomplish that. I guess they kept the road there and back pretty busy the last few weeks. John was born there because his family was passing through on their way to a new home and job in Cincinnati. They stayed with relatives so his mother would be with people she knew at that busy time. We were born two years and two days apart!
One other thing I remember my mother telling me about that time was that she ate oranges all the time. She craved them and the family kept her supplied. That probably was somewhat expensive back then.

My sister and my brother were also born at that hospital. Mary Sue was premature and barely weighed 5 pounds. She was called a blue baby. I can remember the day they brought her home. They drove up and Mama and Daddy came into the house with her wrapped in a receiving blanket.

My brother, John David, was born five years later. The story goes that Mama was very much in labor and Daddy stopped at the half way point and got a police escort. He ended up getting to the hospital before the policeman because he had driven an ambulance some and knew all the shortcuts. He dropped Mama off and went to park the car. When he got back they told him that he had a baby boy. Whew! He almost didn't make it! Mama said she would probably have had him in the car except she was so scared because of how fast Daddy was driving. However, he was a very sick baby. He had the RH factor and became very jaundiced. They had to transfuse all of his blood. He stopped breathing at one point but he made it. I remember being very disappointed when they didn't have a baby with them when Mama came home. However, they brought us a recording of "Purple People Eater". We played that record for years and I think my mother still has it.
