The other years 4-12 were not memorable except for these things:
4th We made animals from coat hangers, newspaper strips and wall paper paste. Mine was a horse.
7th Mrs. Wallace gave a lecture on how to listen. Yeah, I know, we all listen, but she meant how to listen in class and how to learn more by listening effectively. It really worked and made the rest of school easier.
11th Junior Prom - robin's egg blue scalloped hem dress made by my mother
Basketball court attendant to the Basketball Queen. Cool dress - white crepe with white satin trim - made by my mother. Tommy DeWeese was my escort and once when John found the picture he wanted to know who he was and did I date him, etc. A little jealousy? Answer was No, I didn't date him. He was elected to that position just like I was.
12th Senior Prom - Yellow satin with a yellow organza overlay - store bought in Bowling Green.
Drafting Class - first girl accepted to class since my Cousin Carol took it 12 years before.
I had to beg and beg and beg to get into this class. The principal said no
because girls never took that class. The Superintendent first said no
because girls hadn't taken it in years and it was a boy's class. Finally he
relented and I was admitted. Straight A's I loved it!
Others:
Beta Club
Geometry - favorite subject
Four-H - sewing
Girl Scouts - Senior Scout
I'm sure others will come to mind later but for now that's enough.
I liked school and did well. Decided to attend UK instead of Western (where most of the classmates who were going to college were headed). My reasons were that my Father had graduated from UK and that it was where most everyone else wasn't. I was ready to move on. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I'd gone to Western instead.
Moving away from Leitchfield had nothing to do with my family. I just wanted to see what life was like in a bigger city and be more independent. I really wasn't all that independent. Every time I ran low on money Daddy always put more in my account. :)
I wasn't really prepared for a big University like I thought I was. The classes required more studying than I'd had to do in High School. The second semester I contracted Mono and had to be sent home to recover. I slept around the clock for two weeks except for bathroom breaks and Mama making me eat some. I really did poorly that semester. Somewhere I must have signed up for a class and never attended because I don't think I was ever in the building the class was in and I got my first really bad grade. Summer break couldn't come soon enough!
That was fun reading about your proms and UK! I never knew about your dresses or the classes in high school, so fun!
