One of the perks of being here with my mother is hearing the stories. The latest one was about the small red rocking chair in the bedroom where I'm sleeping.
Last night Mama came in and said, "Do you know the story behind this rocker? When I was little it was just a small straight chair for a child and I wouldn't have anything to do with it. So, one day Daddy took it out to the barn and put rockers on it. "
After that, Mama used the chair and really enjoyed it. She said it was a good chair to pull up to the stove and get warm on a cold day. Other people enjoyed it as well. Many adults, both men and women, sat in the rocker to get warm or just to use it for a seat. Earlier that very day I'd sat in it to go through the items in the dresser I was emptying for my own use.
I learned a couple of things from this story. 1. My grandfather was able to figure out how to put rockers on a straight chair. I can't think of anyone I know who could do that today. How did he know how long to make them? What angle to set them, and how did he cut them out? 2. That you never know how a small thing you do for someone can become a lifelong memory.
