Sam has moved on....

The Save our Setters rescue shelter now has custody of Sam. Yesterday morning I went to the vet to sign a release form and they faxed his records and the intake papers that I'd filled out. I stopped at the bank to move some money into MS and Mama's joint account (car repair). By the time I got home, they had called about Sam. I called back and they gave me the number of the volunteer who would meet me to make the exchange.

LaDawn had called. When I called her back she told me she heard Sam barking early this morning and so she got dressed and went to look for him. Apparently he had discovered a hutch of pet rabbits on the back porch of a neighbor. The neighbor had locked Sam in an enclosed part of her porch and planned to call animal control to come and get him. LaDawn talked her into letting her take him instead. She said that if I wanted her to, she would keep him until we found a better place for him. I told her about the call from SOS and that I would be transferring him that afternoon. When I pick him up, Isaiah told me they had taken a bunch of pictures of Sam so they wouldn't forget him. :^{

I took Sam home and put him on the lead so he wouldn't disappear again.

At 2:30 central time, I met the SOS volunteer in Bowling Green. We talked for a while and then put Sam into her car along with the things I'd brought and they were off.

I had brought:
Vaccination records,
Donation to help them with their work,
A gallon zip-lock bag of his food,
His blanket,
His rope chew toy,
The blue leash.

The volunteer took him to get on a bus and he is now somewhere in either Tennessee or Virginia in the care of the "boss" of SOS. Now that sounds like a great place to be!

The volunteer and I talked for quite a while about him, her dogs, etc. She said there is no doubt that he is full-blooded. She said he is a small male and that will make it easier to find him a home because many people don't want a large male (they can weigh up to 110-120 lbs.)

She told me about one of her females who climbed their chain link fence. She finally put a backpack with cans of green beans in it to keep her on the ground. One day she took out a couple of cans to cook and that dog climbed over the fence, backpack and all, and was off exploring. When she found her the dog had ditched the backpack and they never did find it.

She said she had a male who never tried to get out. As long as there were squirrels to watch he was happy. So they dogs are all different and very strong willed. They are extremely intelligent. He's probably smarter than I am.

I called LaDawn and told her about the volunteer and the transfer. She told me that one day she took him out for a run with a long leash and when she started getting tired and was slowing down, that he would stop and wait for her to catch up and then run ahead again, stop and wait, run ahead, etc. She said he seemed to be watching her shadow rather than watching her or pulling on the leash. He's very smart!!!!!!!

SOS has written to tell me that they will keep me posted and that I can call them any time for updates on Sam. Wow!

I was very sad and upset when I watched the volunteer drive off with Sam but I felt better as I drove home. This morning I feel even better.

I know this was the right thing to do for him.
